The following tips for anxiety relief are healthy, natural and effective.

1. Claim Your Power

One of the best ways of managing anxiety is to understand that the power is within you.

Said in another way, YOU have the power to change how you feel.

Once, you believe this, it becomes much easier to reduce anxiety, and even overcome anxiety.

Other people, such as professional experts and loved ones, can support you during your struggle with anxiety, but only you can choose to implement changes in your life in an effort to reduce and heal your anxiety.

So, the first tip for anxiety relief is to shift your thinking toward inner power or self-power.

2. Keep an Anxiety Journal

Paying attention to your anxiety can help you establish what you are doing to make your anxiety worse.

For some people, anxiety is always present, but if you pay close attention, it does go slightly up or slightly down in different situations and with different people.

For example, when I started paying attention to my anxiety, I noticed that the following were the worst culprits:

  • Fast food and desserts
  • Cheese
  • Alcohol and Caffeine
  • Sleeping next to my laptop
  • Being inside all-day

The best way to pay attention to your anxiety is to keep an anxiety journal. You can journal daily about your anxiety levels and activities to help you become more aware of your worst culprits.

3. Eat Healthily

A clean and healthy diet can help you achieve anxiety relief long-term.

Eating healthily means consuming natural whole foods and limiting processed foods.

Natural foods include vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fruit, fresh meat and fish, nuts and seeds. In contrast, processed foods have been changed from their natural form and include refined carbohydrates, cold meats, desserts, baked goods, and similar.

4. Try to get plenty of Fresh Air

Getting plenty of fresh air on a regular basis is another great tip for anxiety relief.

Fresh air helps to clear mental congestion caused by anxiety. You can think of this technique as mental hygiene.

Get fresh air fast by:

  • Walking wherever you can
  • Spending time in nature
  • Visiting parks

For extra anxiety relief, walk barefoot on the grass.

5. Get Good Quality Sleep

Lack of sleep and poor sleep increase anxiety. Equally, anxiety can be exhausting!

So, getting the best quality of sleep is another great tip for anxiety relief.

Here are a few habits to help you get the best sleep!

    • Go to bed by 22:00
    • Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night
    • Avoid eating 3 hours before bedtime
    • Remove all electronics from your bedroom when sleeping
    • Turn off all lights

6. Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise is an excellent tip for anxiety relief.

The type of exercise you choose is not important.

All that matters is that you enjoy it and can work it into your life schedule so that you are exercising regularly.

Yoga, running, exercise classes, team sport, hiking swimming, walking, and similar are all great forms of exercise.

7. Develop a Relaxation Practice

Another great tip for anxiety relief is to develop a relaxation practice.

This will help you to significantly reduce and control anxiety.

For example,

  • deep breathing
  • sitting in silence for 5-10 minutes
  • walking in nature
  • painting
  • reading
  • meditation
  • yoga
  • tai chi
  • and similar.

Choose any practice that helps you feel more relaxed afterward.

8. Take Advantage of Sunshine

Sunshine is a great way to get instant anxiety relief.  Sit out in the sun whenever you can and feel how the rays start to clear your anxiety.

9. Practice Affirmations

Affirming powerful statements can overtime help you change the very beliefs that are making you anxious.

You can use the following affirmations to get started:

  • At this moment, I choose to release the past and look forward to the good that awaits me.
  • With each new breath, I inhale strength and exhale fear. I am learning that it is safe for me to heal and grow.
  • At this moment, I choose to feel calm and peaceful. Everything is unfolding as it should.
  • I choose to fill my mind with positive, nurturing, and healing thoughts.
  • There are only lessons to be learned. I did the best I could.

You can also make up your own affirmations. Just make sure they are in the present tense and that they focus on the positive.

10. Focus on the Present Moment

To help you better understand anxiety, there is a great quote by Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher. He said,

If you are depressed, you are living in the past; if you are anxious, you are living in the future;

That is, anxiety is fear of the future or the unknown.

So, the final tip for anxiety relief is to practice returning to the present moment.

And the easiest way to do that is to turn your attention to your breath.

For example, count your breathing:

  • Breathe in – 4 counts
  • Breathe out – 4 counts
  • Repeat a few times

OR

  • Breath in – 4 counts
  • Hold your breath inside for 4 counts
  • Breathe out – 4 counts
  • Hold for 4 counts before breathing in again
  • Repeat this process 4 times

This is an effective technique because by counting your breathing, you are focused on counting and breathing, making it more difficult to wander off into the future.

Healthy Living

If you believe in self-power and adopt healthy lifestyle habits then it is absolutely possible to achieve anxiety relief. In fact, healthy living and self-power are how I overcame anxiety.
